I came across this article on The Oil Drum today. It's just one example unexpected consequence of peak oil, already in progress: The demand for biofuel crops in Europe is displacing the land available to grow other crops, such as barley and hops, thus driving up the price of beer. The point is that we shouldn't just be focusing on increasing fuel supply - we also have to focus on reducing demand, or goods like beer (and countless others) will run out before the oil does.
